The Longest Walk Is Coming Through Terre Haute Indiana

  • On Feb. 11th, Longest Walk participants embarked on a 5 month journey from San Francisco to Washington, D.C. with the goal of arriving on July 11th. The Longest Walk south route is being led by AIM co-founder Dennis J. Banks. It is an extraordinary grassroots effort on a national level to bring attention to the environmental disharmony of Mother Earth, sacred site issues, and to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the original longest walk.

    15 May 2008

    The good people at Red Road Awareness have asked to help the walkers through Indiana -

    Right now there are about 60 walkers but more people can sign on to participate.  The Route is as follows;

    1. May 19 Marshall to Terre Haute ---- Interstate 70 - Highway 40 (National Historic Road)
    2. May 20 - 21 Terre Haute to Indianapolis ---- Interstate 70 - Highway 40
    3. May 22 - 25  Indianapolis to Richmond ---- Interstate 70 - Highway 40

    If you know of any sacred sites along the Hwy 40 Route or any others in the state that need protection, please compile that information.  The walkers are taking these lists to Washington D.C.  If you are aware of issues concerning Native People and wish to write a letter, please do so.  These are issues the walkers intend to address on your behalf in Washington D. C.

    Any and all media contacts are encouraged to come out and cover this - there will be a press conference at the Native American Museum at Dobbs Park in Terre Haute on or about May 20th.  A definate date is forthcoming - check back for updates.

    You can sponsor the walkers via www.paypal.com with payments to redroadawareness@yahoo.com

    Or you can make checks or money orders payable to:

    Longest Walk, c/o M. Cordes, P.O. Box 1171, Radcliff Kentucky,  40159-1171

    The Longest Walk is an American Indian Spiritual Walk for Survival - of our sacred sites and Mother Earth.  Think about what that means to you and consider sponsoring the walkers on this journey they make for all of us.

    When you come to meet and cheer on the walkers please bring food, gift cards for food (including volunteers to help cook and serve it), paper products (cups, plates, utensils) monetary donations to fix their bus, laundry soap, bleach and fabric softener, a place to hold inipis for the walkers if possible, drummers/singers to help boost morale and also to welcome them to our state via Terre Haute.  We need banners, food, water and Gatorade at the ready as well.

    The walkers are tired, hungry, and exhausted.  Let's support their journey and cheer them on!
